Safari lodges and beach resorts both call themselves “all inclusive” but they mean completely different things by it.

At a safari lodge, you get meals, game drives, maybe house wine at dinner. At a Diani resort, you get the pool bar included, buffet meals, probably kayaks. Book a combined trip expecting both to work the same way and you’ll end up confused about what you’re actually paying for.

We started labelling our quotes “safari all-in” and “resort all inclusive” separately after too many emails asking why the lodge charged for a gin and tonic.

I’ve had to sort out a few messes recently because of the KAPS portal. Masai Mara fees now get paid online through KAPS before you arrive—the old system of paying at the gate is gone. If your operator hasn’t pre-registered you, the guards at Sekenani won’t care what your voucher says. They’ll make you pay again on the spot. I had one family last year stuck at the gate for 45 minutes while we sorted their paperwork by phone. Ask your operator specifically: “Are my Mara fees pre-paid through KAPS?”

Papillon Lagoon Reef

Safari stays: Sentrim Mara Lodge (full board, near Sekenani Gate) Beach stays: Papillon Lagoon Reef (all inclusive)

Sentrim is basic but the location is good—you’re inside the reserve within 20 minutes of the gate. Papillon won’t win design awards but the beach is genuinely lovely and the snorkelling is decent if the tide cooperates. The drive from Nairobi to the Mara takes about 5-6 hours depending on traffic through Narok. Not glamorous, but it keeps costs down.

Narok County hiked the Mara fees significantly for 2026. Stings the wallet, but honestly it does help keep vehicle clusters down during peak crossing season.

Safari stays: Amboseli Serena Lodge, Mara Leisure Camp Beach stays: Leopard Beach Resort (all inclusive)

Fair warning: the road to Amboseli can be a free African massage—very bumpy in sections. If you’ve got a bad back, this is the one time I’d tell you to consider the flight upgrade. The mountain views are worth it though. Kilimanjaro shows herself best before about 9am; after that clouds usually roll in. Amboseli fees (USD 90/day as of January 2026) go through KWSPay.

Leopard Beach has a private section which keeps the beach vendors away. The pizza place there is surprisingly good.

Safari stays: Lake Nakuru Sopa Lodge, Kicheche Mara Camp Beach stays: Baobab Beach Resort (all inclusive)

This is where things get noticeably different. Conservancy camps cap vehicle numbers at sightings—you won’t have 30 Land Cruisers jostling around a leopard. Night drives are allowed. Walking safaris too. The Kicheche guides are some of the best I’ve worked with; they know individual lions by name, track leopards by territory, actually understand animal behaviour rather than just driving to where the radio chatter says “lion spotted.”

Bush flights have a 15kg soft bag limit. Leave your hard suitcase in Nairobi.

Safari stays: Kicheche Mara Camp, Tortilis Camp Beach stays: Alfajiri Villas (private house with staff)

Flying everywhere. No road days. Some people love it. Personally I think you miss something by not driving through the landscape, watching the terrain change from highland to savannah. But if you’re short on time or just hate long drives, this is the way.

Alfajiri isn’t a resort—it’s a private clifftop house. Your own chef, your own staff, no buffet lines, no “entertainment” at 8pm. For couples or families who want actual privacy, nothing else in Diani comes close.

About Guides

Most packages assign you a lodge guide. They’re fine. They’ll find you lions.

But I’ve seen plenty of guides who just drive to where the other 20 cars are clustered around a sighting. A good guide reads the bush—wind direction, animal behaviour, tracks in the dust. The difference matters.

KPSGA certifies guides at different levels. Bronze is entry—most lodge guides sit here. Silver requires at least three years plus written and practical exams on birds, plants, animal behaviour. Gold is rare; I can probably count the Gold-rated guides I know personally on two hands. The distinction isn’t just bureaucracy—Silver guides tend to know individual animals, anticipate where a hunt is heading, position you for photographs rather than just pointing at distant shapes.

If you’re staying mid-range or above, email the lodge and ask: “Can we request a Silver-rated guide?” Sometimes it’s possible, sometimes not. Worth asking.

And if you’d rather watch a single lioness for an hour than tick off ten sightings in a morning, tell your guide upfront. Put it in your booking email. Some guides assume guests want the Big Five checklist experience. If that’s not you, say so.

Diani Beach Resorts

Everyone mentions Baobab, Leopard Beach, and Papillon. They’re reliable. But they’re not the only options and they’re not always the best fit.

Personally? I’d pick Southern Palms if you want the best pool and a quieter crowd. I’d pick Swahili Beach if you’re trying to escape the buffet-line resort feel. Neptune Paradise is good for families—big pools, kids’ activities, that sort of thing. Diani Sea Lodge is budget but perfectly decent if you’re not fussy.

Before you book anywhere, ask the resort for their exact AI (All Inclusive) list. Which alcohol brands are covered? Which bars? What hours? Some places include Tusker and Kenya Cane but charge for anything imported. Others have the pool bar on AI but charge at the à la carte restaurant. Get it in writing.

Tides at Diani

I always tell guests: don’t just look at the beach, look at the tide table. Diani has big swings. If you head down at 2pm on a spring tide, you’ll be walking half a kilometre across sharp coral just to get your knees wet.

There’s a sweet spot about two hours either side of high tide when the water is clear and actually swimmable. The beach operators—the guys selling boat trips—know exactly when the good window is. Ask them.

When to Book

July-October: Migration season. Mara fees double. Conservancy camps fill up months out. If you want a specific camp, book early.

January-March: Dry, good game viewing, prices more reasonable.

November-December: Short rains. Everything is green. Decent value.

April-May: Long rains. Muddy roads, some camps close. We don’t usually book then.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is an all inclusive holiday to Kenya?

Budget packages start around £1,687 per person for 7 nights (as of January 2026). Mid-range runs £2,500-3,500. Luxury is £5,000-8,000+. Prices assume two people sharing.

What’s the best all inclusive resort in Diani?

Depends what matters to you. Baobab has the most restaurants and facilities. Leopard Beach has better private beach access. Southern Palms is quieter and better value. Swahili Beach works for couples wanting something smaller. Neptune suits families.

Is Kenya good for all inclusive holidays?

Yes, but understand the model. Safari lodges are “full board”—meals included, drinks sometimes. Beach resorts are proper all inclusive. Know which applies where.

When’s the best time?

January-March for dry weather and lower prices. July-October for migration but significantly higher costs. November has short rains but reasonable value.

Are drinks included?

At most Diani resorts, local beer, spirits, and house wine are covered. Imported brands aren’t. Safari lodges vary—some include house drinks, others charge separately. Always ask.
